Sex is choice, Periods are not. Says women after 12% gst levied on sanitry pads and condoms left out

The question which today women is asking from the Government after they put sanitary and other hygiene products in 12% - 15% bracket, is why did they do so? The article published in The Hindu has been written by Sushmita Dev who is a Congress MP in the Lok Sabha raises the question of what if a women dies just becuse she could not afford sanitary pads.

Movement such as "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" could only be materialized if they get full support from Government and also from every corner of the society.

More than 11,000-plus products were discussed by the GST Council and bangles and bindis have been exempted from GST. However keeping the most important item out of GST did not came in any one member of the GS council is of real concern.

She mentions a girl who died in Assam’s Baksa district because she used a cloth during her period and got infected with maggots which reached her stomach. She died in pain as her family members refused to take her to hospital since they had doubt of her being pregnant.

One twitter user shared her thoughts

Sex is a choice, but periods are not. When condom is tax free why can't napkins be?

This is just one case she has mentioned however our logic says there are millions of women living far flung areas where women are not able to get these pads due to short supplies and where it available it is too highly priced that women resist from buying and instead choose cloths which may lead infections and serious health issues.
